Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky - Swan Lake

Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky - Swan Lake

Today's episode is a discussion of obsessions: mine with Tchaikovsky and Mick's with Coke Zero #notsponsored

Tchaikovsky's writing for Swan Lake was not well received at the time of its premiere, but it has set the standard for the music people expect to hear at the ballet.

This was another episode without any alcohol. While it is fun to indulge and discover new flavors, it is important to also drink responsibly.

Patty is back! To talk about two lesser known classics, Pimm's cup and Smetana's "From My Life"

Pimm's cup: pour 2 oz Pimm's no. 1 into a glass with ice, then fill the glass with ginger ale or lemon lime soda. Garnish at your own risk (what does that mean?? Listen to the episode to find out!)

Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart - Violin Concerto No. 5

One of the most amazing things about music is belonging to a community that allows you to connect with new people from all over the country (and world)! Meghan and I discuss our love for Mozart and some of the challenges with the piece. All while drinking gin martinis.

Martini: 2 oz gin, 1 oz dry vermouth, dash orange bitters, stir and pour into a martini glass. (Disclaimer - you can really do it however you want, this is just how I made mine)

Felix Mendelssohn - String Octet

Dare I say this is one of the coolest pieces of chamber music written for string instruments? Brilliant writing, lots to do for everyone, easy to listen to, and engaging. I hope you enjoy it!

Gold rush: 2 ounces Bourbon, 3/4 ounce lemon juice, 3/4 ounce honey syrup. Shake and strain into a coupe glass

Do you think of doves when you think of moonlight? ...no? Okay, maybe it was a stretch. BUT my best friend and I decided to drink palomas ("dove" in Spanish) while listening to Beethoven's "Moonlight" sonata.

Paloma: 2 oz Tequila, 2 oz grapefruit juice, 1 oz lime juice, 1/2 oz cilantro simple syrup - shake, strain over ice, then top with some grapefruit soda (we used lacroix)

One of the great string quartets: lovely moments for all instruments, exciting key changes, driving rhythm, and best of all it was written right here in the heart of the US.

WoO Beethoven!

WoO Beethoven!

We all love Beethoven, but on this episode we say "woo" a lot. Why? Well, when a great composer leaves behind unpublished pieces of music someone has to categorize them somehow, and the WoO (Worke ohne Opus) numbering system was born.

Woo woo: 2 oz vodka, 1/2 oz peach Schnapps, as much cranberry juice as you like

Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart - Symphony No. 41 "Jupiter"

I have another very special guest this week, my mom! Our first guest to talk about both Mozart and wine (which both the title and logo of the show suggest will be the only subjects).

Symphony No. 41 "Jupiter" is Mozart's last. My mom did all my homework for me this week and gives a really great history about Mozart and has great things to say about this piece.

New Your Sour: 2 oz Rye whiskey or bourbon, 3/4 oz simple syrup, 1 oz lemon juice, 1 egg white (we used aquafaba), 1/2 oz red wine

Ludwig van Beethoven - Symphony No. 5

Beethoven's very famous fifth symphony (da-da-da-dah...da-da-da-dah...you know the one). But wait, there's more! The beautiful, sometimes dark, and ultimately triumphant second, third, and fourth movements.

Introducing the listener challenge: how can you connect the mojito with Beethoven?
